Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake 17 Days
The big prize here is not just reaching the Everest region. This 17-day trek links Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri with the Cho La Pass route to the Everest Base Camp area, giving you a fuller circuit through Khumbu than the usual in-and-out trail.
I like two things in particular: a rest day in Namche Bazaar gives you time to adjust before the higher trail, and the package includes trekking meals, lodge stays, a guide and porter support. Past trips have featured helpful guides such as Pemba and Pasang, though you cannot count on a particular guide being assigned.
The trade-off is the altitude and effort. You climb above 5,400 meters, cross a high pass, and spend many days walking in succession. This is a serious trek, not a comfortable sightseeing holiday, and the listed 17-day plan may stretch to 19 days depending on the trip arrangement.
The route in a nutshell

- Gokyo and Everest in one trek: Visit Gokyo Lake and hike Gokyo Ri, then cross Cho La Pass toward the Everest Base Camp area.
- A high point at 5,420 meters: Cho La Pass is the route’s major physical challenge, with the itinerary also reaching Kala Patthar at 5,550 meters as an alternative to Everest Base Camp.
- A useful pause in Namche: The schedule sets aside a day for acclimatization, exploring or resting before climbing higher.
- Meals and lodges are included on the trail: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered during trekking, along with lodge accommodation, guide costs and a porter for every two people.
- Kathmandu stays are part of the package: The city accommodation is described as three-star, twin-share, with breakfast.
- Plan for costs outside the package: International airfare, travel insurance, tips, Kathmandu meals beyond breakfast and personal spending are excluded.
From Kathmandu to the trail at Lukla

The trip begins in Kathmandu, where airport pickup and transfer to a hotel are included. The city stay is described as a three-star hotel with twin-sharing rooms and breakfast, a practical place to settle in before the mountain portion begins.
On Day 2, you fly to Lukla and walk to Phakding, at 2,620 meters. The flight is the gateway to the trek, and the first walk is a gentler start than the high-altitude days ahead. You’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner included on trekking days, with tea or coffee also listed.
The next day’s walk to Namche Bazaar climbs to 3,420 meters. This is where the trail begins to feel more demanding, and where the schedule wisely slows down for a full day. You can use Day 4 to rest, explore or acclimatize. I would treat that pause as part of the trek, not a spare day to squeeze out.
The group limit is 18. That is small enough to be more manageable than a large tour, though still a group rather than a private trek. Your guide’s salary, accommodation, meals and insurance are included, as are porter services, with one porter assigned to carry baggage for every two people.

Namche, Dole and the climb to Gokyo
After Namche, the route leaves the main trail and heads toward Dole, at 4,110 meters. The listed walk takes about six hours. You’ll gain elevation steadily, so the physical work becomes more apparent even as the scenery opens up.
Day 6 continues to Machhermo, at 4,410 meters, in a stated three to five hours. The relatively short walking estimate does not make it a low-effort day: you are already well above the elevation of most mountain towns, and each person responds differently to altitude.
From Machhermo, you reach Gokyo at 4,760 meters. The lakes are a major reason to choose this route. Instead of simply following the standard Everest Base Camp approach, you spend time in the Gokyo area and get a chance to see its sacred waters before turning toward the high pass.
Gokyo is also the base for the Day 8 hike to Gokyo Ri. The itinerary then continues to Thagnak, at 4,678 meters. Gokyo Ri is a high viewpoint, so expect a demanding outing before the next stage. The schedule does not give a specific hiking duration, and it is sensible to keep this day flexible rather than assume it will feel like a short stroll.
Cho La Pass and the route to Lobuche
Day 9 is the trek’s big crossing: Cho La Pass, at 5,420 meters, followed by a descent to Dzonglha. This is the route’s most obvious test of stamina and altitude. The pass is why the Gokyo route offers a more varied circuit, but it is also the day that makes this trek a poor fit for anyone looking for an easy walk.
From Dzonglha, you head to Lobuche, at 4,940 meters, on Day 10. This brings you closer to the Everest Base Camp area, with the route continuing through increasingly high terrain. The schedule does not specify walking times for these stages, so you should not judge the days only by distance or the calendar.
The following day takes you to Gorak Shep, at 5,147 meters. By this point you have climbed high, crossed a pass and walked for many consecutive days. Rest, hydration and following your guide’s pace matter more than trying to prove a point.
Everest Base Camp or Kala Patthar
On Day 12, the plan is a morning hike to either Everest Base Camp, at 5,365 meters, or Kala Patthar, at 5,550 meters, before descending to Pheriche at 3,950 meters. The itinerary presents these as alternatives, not as two guaranteed hikes in one morning. Ask the operator which option is planned for your departure and how that choice is made.
This distinction matters. Everest Base Camp is the celebrated destination, while Kala Patthar is the higher named point in the itinerary and an alternative viewpoint hike. The schedule does not promise a summit climb or a visit to Everest’s summit, of course. You are trekking in the region, not attempting the mountain.
The descent to Pheriche is a substantial change in elevation after the morning’s high point. It also marks the beginning of the return toward Lukla. This is a demanding day, so the appeal is not only the destination but the chance to head back down after reaching the trek’s highest section.

The long return to Lukla
Day 13 leads to Tengboche, at 3,860 meters. Khumbu’s largest monastery is one of the highlights named for the trip, and this stop gives the return walk a cultural point of interest as well as mountain scenery. The itinerary does not state whether a guided monastery visit or entrance fee is included, so check before you set expectations.
From Tengboche, you walk to Monjo on Day 14, then continue to Lukla on Day 15. These are still full trekking days, even though the route is descending. Downhill walking can be hard on tired legs, and the cumulative effort is worth keeping in mind when deciding whether this 17-day plan suits you.
Day 16 is the flight back to Kathmandu, with breakfast and dinner listed. Day 17 is departure day, with breakfast included. The package includes airport transfers and transportation, but international airfare is excluded. Since the itinerary depends on flights to and from Lukla, ask the operator what local flight arrangements are covered and what happens if a flight schedule changes.
What the $1,480 price covers
At $1,480 per person, the package bundles much of the costly support you need on a long trek: trekking lodge accommodation, meals on trail, a guide, porter support, permits and TIMS card, and Kathmandu hotel stays with breakfast. It also lists airport pickup and departure, transportation, first-aid medicine items, a trip T-shirt, an achievement certificate and a farewell dinner with a cultural show.
That can be good value if you want an organized trip and do not want to arrange each part yourself. The meals matter in particular: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during trekking, which reduces the number of daily costs you need to manage while on the route.
The inclusions are not all-encompassing. International flights, travel insurance, tips, bar bills, personal expenses, extra Kathmandu meals and tour entrance fees are excluded. The package also says sleeping bags and down jackets are available if needed, but the wording does not make clear whether rental is included in the price. Confirm that detail, along with what baggage the porter will carry and what you must carry yourself.
There is also a small but positive service record. The experience has a 5.0 rating based on seven reviews, with praise focused on the mountain views, helpful guides and porters, and meals and accommodation. Pemba and Pasang are named as guides on past trips, but those names are examples, not a promise about your own guide. Seven ratings are encouraging, but they are too few to treat as a guarantee.
Who should choose this trek
This route is best for someone who wants more than the standard Everest Base Camp out-and-back trek and is comfortable with a long, high-altitude walking holiday. The Gokyo lakes, Gokyo Ri and Cho La Pass add variety, while the Everest Base Camp area remains part of the route.
It is less suitable if you want short walks, a relaxed pace, private rooms throughout or certainty about the exact daily walking hours. The itinerary gives durations for only some stages. You should also be prepared for basic trekking lodge accommodation, shared rooms in the Kathmandu hotel, and a schedule that places many walking days close together.
I would ask the operator a few direct questions before paying: Is the hike on Day 12 to Base Camp or Kala Patthar? Are sleeping bags and down jackets included or rented at extra cost? What precisely is covered in the local transportation and flights? Those answers can change your budget and your expectations.
Should you book it?
Book this trek if you want Gokyo and the Everest region on one demanding route, value having meals and porter support arranged, and are ready for high elevations and a full schedule. The included rest day in Namche and the support team make the logistics easier, while the Cho La crossing gives the route its adventurous edge.
Think twice if you have limited time, want an easy mountain holiday or need exact assurances about guide assignment, gear rental or the Day 12 objective. At this price, the package offers a lot of core trekking support, but you should clarify the open questions and budget separately for excluded costs before committing.
